Undeniably the most innovative and defining office machine ever created is the fax machine- the ability to transmit images, reports, and documents across the world in mere minutes, has revolutionized global communication. Now more than ever, fax machines are no longer just a staple in the business office, but a common fixture for the home as well. As far as office machines go, the fax machine still remains at the top of the list in terms of necessity and convenience.
Fax Machines: History and Operation
The fax machine was first created surprisingly over 100 years ago in 1843 by a man named Alexander Bain, who first introduced the concept of “reproducing” images by transmission. It wasn’t until the 1930’s when the first “facsimile machine” was commercially used by the Associated Press to transmit photos regularly by fax. With the increased use of faxes in businesses in the late 80s to 90s, the fax gained momentum, until it eventually became a household name. Today, it’s become a requirement for businesses world wide.
A standard fax machine has a modem, a built in copier and an image scanner all in one device.
Here is the operation behind it: a hard copy image is passed through the fax slot where it is scanned and the image is recorded. The recorded image is then transmitted by phone line to another receiving fax machine. The receiving fax then prints the transmitted image on to a paper, creating a copy of the transmitted image.
Since the implementation of email into the world of instant communications, fax machines although still a popular device; now must compete against the use of email and new internet faxing services. Even with the convenience of these services, the need for the fax has not weaned; as the requirement for hard copy documentation still must be used for certain legal purposes. Also consider that since the introduction of multifunctional machines into the business world, the fax is now featured as a primary function for the newer All-in-one devices.
Laser and Inkjet Fax Machines
As printing technology has evolved, so too has the fax machine; in that today’s faxes now commonly use laser printing to print documents. Like the printer, this is the best choice by far for businesses with heavy duty faxing and printing. The newer faxes can be connected to computers, and additionally come with useful extra features, like password security and autodial.
On the flip side, the best choice for a smaller business or for the home would be an inkjet fax machine, with added printing and scanning capabilities, conveniently compact and moderately priced for the home. These are not particularly meant for excessive work loads of printing, but do a great job otherwise-perfect for generic home use.
