Industrial Facility near Shanghai

Brian first learned Chinese in the 1960s, when he did a full-time language course for 2½ years during his first career in the Army.

Later he joined the Diplomatic Service, where for nearly a quarter of a century he concentrated almost exclusively on Chinese affairs. He honed his Chinese language skills, becoming virtually native in spoken Mandarin (on the ‘phone he is often mistaken for a Chinese), fluent in Cantonese and also fluent in written Chinese. He regularly writes E-mails in Chinese.

Brian regards the ability to communicate effectively in Chinese as a tool to help in the building of personal relationships, which are vital to the conduct of business in China. Through years of experience he has acquired the ability to win the trust of Chinese officials and businessmen. This stood him in good stead during his diplomatic career and is now invaluable to the clients of EastBridge Associates.

Brian is a senior consultant to MEC International, the China Market Intelligence Group and the Futong International Economic Cooperation Corporation. He also advises the Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee and is honorary adviser to the London Hebei Province Association.

He is a member of the Institute of Linguists, the China-Britain Business Council, the China-Europe Financial Exchange, the London Chamber of Commerce, the Croydon Chamber of Commerce and the South London Export Club.
